Hi in the galactic halo

چکیده
We find solid evidence for diffuse Hi gas at substantial z heights in our Galaxy, with a velocity dispersion of σ = 60 km s −1 and a vertical projected column density of N Hi = 1.4 · 10 19 cm −2. This pervasive component of the emission spectrum could be identified in the Leiden/Dwingeloo 21-cm Survey (LDS) after increasing the accuracy further by correcting the observations for reflections from the ground. Investigations of receiver bandpass and stray radiation effects could not explain this component as an artifact of the instrumentation. Assuming that the distribution of mass and pressure perpendicular to the galactic plane is in hydrostatic equilibrium with the galactic potential, we derive a vertical exponential scale height of h z 4.4 kpc for the observed diffuse high-dispersion Hi component. The radial distribution is characterized by the corresponding galactocentric scale length A 1 15 kpc.

Low-Velocity Halo Clouds
Models that reproduce the observed high-velocity clouds (HVCs) also predict clouds at lower radial velocities that may easily be confused with Galactic disk (|z| < 1 kpc) gas. We describe the first search for these low-velocity halo clouds (LVHCs) using IRAS data and the initial data from the Galactic Arecibo L-band Feed Array survey in Hi (GALFA-Hi). The technique is based upon the expectation...
متن کاملThe Hydrogen Clouds in the Galactic Halo
New 21cm observations with the Green Bank Telescope (GBT) show that a significant fraction of the HI in the inner Galaxy’s halo ∼ 1 kpc from the midplane exists in the form of discrete clouds. Some look very much like a Spitzer (1968) “standard” diffuse cloud but with their HI in two phases. They mark the transition between the neutral disk and the highly ionized halo. The dominant motion of th...
متن کاملDisk-Halo Interaction - I. Three-Dimensional Evolution of the Galactic Disk
The results of a three-dimensional model for disk-halo interaction are presented here. The model considers explicitly the input of energy and mass by isolated and correlated supernovae in the disk. Once disrupted by the explosions, the disk never returns to its initial state. Instead it approaches a state where a thin HI disk is formed in the Galactic plane overlayed by thick HI and HII gas dis...
متن کاملThe Nature of a Dusty Ring in Virgo
We detected a ring-like distribution of far-infrared emission in the direction of the center of the Virgo cluster. We studied this feature in the FIR, radio, and optical domains, and deduced that the dust within the feature reddens the galaxies in the direction of the Virgo cluster but does not affect stars within the Milky Way. This is likely to be a dusty feature in the foreground of the Virg...
متن کاملAntisymmetry in the Faraday Rotation Sky Caused by a Nearby Magnetized Bubble
Rotation measures of pulsars and extragalactic point sources have been known to reveal largescale antisymmetries in the Faraday rotation sky with respect to the Galactic plane and halo that have been interpreted as signatures of the mean magnetic field in the Galactic halo. We describe Faraday rotation measurements of the diffuse Galactic polarized radio emission over a large region in the nort...
متن کاملTwo measures of the shape of the Milky Way’s dark halo
In order to test the reliability of determinations of the shapes of galaxies’ dark matter halos, we have made such measurements for the Milky Way by two independent methods. First, we have combined the measurements of the over-all mass distribution of the Milky Way derived from its rotation curve and the measurements of the amount of dark matter in the solar neighborhood obtained from stellar k...
